B. Understanding Assimilation and Reclaiming Cultural & Collective Autonomy with Angela Mictlanxochitl Anderson Guerrero, PhD

The myth of the United States as a “melting pot” and concepts of “mestizaje” are misnomers that can detract from the impact of assimilation over generations on who we are in the family, as leaders, and how we construct our professional identities. In this workshop, we take a brief look back at the history of colonization and migration that have impacted the socialization of communities and the workforce in the United States. With that foundation, we will deconstruct understandings of ‘imposter syndrome’, ‘nepantla’, and ‘cognitive dissonance’ as frameworks to situate how our cultural identities are woven and limited in our leadership practices. In the spirit of compassion and acceptance, you will be guided to imagine how to reclaim cultural and collective autonomies and how to assess technical and adaptive leadership approaches to serve our well-being and future possibilities.
